mercedes “Say the word”

When Merkley+Partners approached us to work on their "Say The Word" Super Bowl spot for Mercedes, we were given the unique challenge of bringing two iconic animated characters into the real world spotlight. While we wanted to sufficiently capture the look and animation style, we also needed to provide characters that fit into the commercial's idealized live action world. This resulted in a stylized approach to both animation and FX that combined real world shading with exaggerated squash and stretch performance.

From a visual effects standpoint, it was important for us to manipulate the smoke simulations of the rocket on a custom level for each shot. Different elements were at play shot to shot, resulting in a need for varying degrees of smoke dissipation and density. Pairing this with the animation of the character and his rocket, we were able to put together a few fun shots, reminiscent of that classic and iconic animation.
